Hydration and Overall Wellness: Beyond Just Drinking Water

The Role of Water in Your Body

Water comprises about 60% of your body weight and is essential for virtually every bodily function. From regulating temperature to transporting nutrients and removing waste, adequate hydration is fundamental to health.

Signs You Might Be Dehydrated

Thirst is often a late indicator of dehydration. Earlier signs include:

How Much Water Do You Need?

While the traditional recommendation is eight glasses daily, individual needs vary based on activity level, climate, diet, and health status. A practical approach is the "half your body weight in ounces" method—if you weigh 150 pounds, aim for 75 ounces of water daily.

Listen to your body's signals and adjust accordingly. Those who exercise regularly or live in hot climates may need significantly more.

Beyond Plain Water

Other beverages contribute to hydration, including herbal teas, coconut water, and milk-based drinks. However, beverages with high sugar or caffeine content should be consumed in moderation. Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber, and leafy greens provide both water and electrolytes.

Hydration for Performance

Dehydration impairs both physical and mental performance. Even a 2% loss in body fluid can reduce athletic performance and cognitive function. Athletes and active individuals should drink 16-20 ounces of water 2-3 hours before exercise and continue hydrating during and after activity.
